Black Brilliance
-
"When American history books mention famous black scientists, the list usually doesn't go much further than botanist George Washington Carver, the former slave who did wonders for the peanut. Why aren't there more on the list? Over the decades, there's been a lot of talk about racial differences in intelligence scores, paralleling the debate over the gender gap in math and science. But the case of industrial chemist Percy Julian, a pioneer in the production of synthetic alkaloids and steroids, illustrates how racial stereotypes and downright discrimination served to dull black brilliance."

Zerhouni for a Day: A Challenge
-
The Problem: The NIHs budget doubled over the past few years, and the NSF is currently working on a budget doubling of its own. Despite this vast influx of new federal funding, approval rates for grant proposals at the NIH have plummeted, and similar things are happening at NSF. The Challenge: If you were in charge, tell us what would you do differently. Join a public discussion.

Women in Science: The Battle Moves to the Trenches
-
NY Times, December 19, 2006. "Since the 1970s, women have surged into science and engineering classes in larger and larger numbers, even at top-tier institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where half the undergraduate science majors and more than a third of the engineering students are women. Half of the nations medical students are women, and for decades the numbers have been rising similarly in disciplines like biology and mathematics. Yet studies show that women in science still routinely receive less research support than their male colleagues, and they have not reached the top academic ranks in numbers anything like their growing presence would suggest."

ScienceCareers.org | Lobbying Congress: A New Role for Postdocs?
-
sciencecareers.org, 7 September 2001 - Robert Bartolo [bobdc2 at verizon.net ] In this opinion piece, Robert Bartolo * argues that improving the employment conditions of postdoctoral researchers requires more than institution-level action. Bartolo also argues that postdocs, and those working with them, have an important role in establishing national priorities for research and development. Possible action items for grassroots postdoc organizing at the national level might include: * Persuading Congress, NIH, NSF, and other funders to classify postdocs as employees instead of "nonemployees" or "trainees," in order to facilitate extension of full employee benefits. * Persuading Congress, NSF, NIH, and other funders to increase the minimum salaries for postdocs and work toward increasing the use of research scientist positions with complete compensation packages.....

The Scientific Approach
-
A nice editorial in The Scientist on better approaches to increasing diversity. "Despite our scientific training, when we think about ways to build a more diverse biomedical research workforce, we may base our ideas on sentiments and preconceptions rather than the best evidence. One way to avoid this is to approach the challenge of increasing diversity as a scientific problem."

Does Science Promote Women?
-
Ginther and Kahn use data from the NSF's Survey of Doctorate Recipients (the SDR) to estimate the chances of obtaining a tenure track position and of subsequent promotions as a function of sex and other explanatory variables. Their findings, in a nutshell: 1) Overall, women are less likely to obtain tenure track positions in the sciences, 2) However, the gap is entirely explained (in a statistical sense) by marriage and children, 3) Furthermore, there is little sex-related difference in the likelihood promotion to tenure or full professor.
